COMMUNICATION GUIDELINES
Communication/ Conflict Resolution Policy
- A player should discuss issues with the person he/she is having a conflict with before going to the next level.
- If the conflict is not resolved, the next level of contact for resolution is communication with the head coach.
- Communication with the head coach is followed by contact with the Director of Coaching.
- Communication with the director of coaching is then followed by contact with the board of directors.
This policy applies to parents as well. Please discuss conflicts with the head coach FIRST before communicating with the Director of Coaching or board of directors. The Montrose Soccer Club communication policy is modeled directly after the school district policy. The following Grievance Process is quoted directly from the Montrose County School District Activity/Athletic Procedure Handbook:
Parent – Coach Relationship: If you have a concern or question, the following procedures will be followed in this order:
Read and understand the rules and philosophy of the Montrose County School District RE-1J athletic procedures and athletic program handbooks. Contact the team coach and/or head coach FIRST to discuss your concerns. If you still have concerns, contact the Activities/Athletic Director. If the concern still exists, submit a written statement outlining your concern and a meeting will be arranged with the parent, coach, and the Activities/Athletic Director. The next step of the process is to meet with the principal and Activities/Athletic Director.
MEMBER EXPECTATIONS
SPORTSMANSHIP CODE OF CONDUCT
Sportsmanship is one of the most important parts of citizenship and athletics. We will train at a high level in preparation for games and play fairly and honestly. We will respect our club, community, coaches, teammates, officials, opponents, fans, and ourselves. Each club member represents his/her family, team, club, and community year-round. He/she also represents him/herself. Any conduct that is detrimental to that representation may result in removal from the club. Club members will conduct themselves in a professional manner at all times and in all places.
- ALL members must gain an understanding and appreciation for the laws of the game. LEARN THE RULES. If you do not know the rules, refrain from expressing opinions to coaches or officials.
- Laws of the Game: https://www.theifab.com/laws/latest/the-field-of-play/?side-menu-category=laws-of-the-game&side-menu-sub-category=laws-1-17&side-menu-open=true&side-menu-open=true
- Exercise representative behavior always. Your behavior influences others whether you are aware of it or not. Be always a positive representative for your club and team. Give respect to get respect.
- Recognize and show appreciation for an outstanding play by either team. Applause for an opponent’s good performance displays generosity and courtesy that should be regularly practiced. This reflects a true awareness of the game by recognizing and acknowledging quality.
- Exhibit respect for the official(s). They have been trained in the laws of the game and are performing to the best of their ability. Mistakes by all participants are part of the game. Treating them with respect, even if you disagree with their judgement, will only make a positive impression of you and your team.
- Openly display respect for the opponent at all times. Opponents should be treated cordially and be accorded tolerance. Treat them as you want to be treated.
- Display pride in your actions. Never allow your ego to interfere with good judgment and your responsibility as a club and team representative.
PARENT EXPECTATIONS
The parents are an integral part of the team. We will be successful only if we get coaches, parents, and players working together to achieve excellence. Players or parents must call or speak with the head coach when a concern arises; hopefully before it becomes a problem. Sometimes, the coaches are not aware of problems or circumstances that a player is dealing with until a parent points that situation out. Parents are welcome at practices. Parents are encouraged to fully enjoy every game that your player competes in by positively encouraging and supporting the play of the team and your student athlete. Parents should be respectful of the performance of the officials, coaches, players, and opponents.
- Learn the rules of the game and encourage your child to play by the rules.
- Have your child at the field and read to play at the scheduled time.
- Pick Players up on time. Please be at the field at the scheduled time to pick them up.
If you are watching practices or games:
- You are NOT allowed to coach - Absolutely no coaching or instructing from the sidelines.
- Words of encouragement are the ONLY things you should be saying.
- Stay off the field while the kids are playing.
- Say nothing to the referees. The coach or speaking team captain is the only avenue we will use to address the referees.
- Thank your coaches – win or lose! Remember ALL of our coaches are sacrificing their own time to coach your child
- Only engage in positive interactions with coaches, officials, parents and players.
- Keep things in perspective - This is a youth soccer program. It is for the kids. This is a game.
